The faint padding of footsteps seemed to echo off of the brick walls; they were rapid, as if the person treading across the space was in peril. Pressing her back against the rough exterior - as she often witnessed in spy movies, Maya tilted her chin to peer down the alleyway. Light splashed along the edges, spawned from the lamp posts strategically placed on every corner. Voices melded together in the distance, and if she listened hard enough, she could distinguish a few key words, one referring to Jamie's surname. As the pad of footsteps hurtled on, she sped after them. A sheen of sweat glimmered above her brow as she made out the shape of moppy hair drifting in waves throughout the wind. Though Maya was no athlete, she rushed towards him. Jamie, she had to see Jamie.

Jamie felt as if his heart was about to beat out of his chest. He could hear his blood pulsing. He could feel everything around him, and everything seemed to unsettle him more than the last thing. He wondered if this was what it felt like to go insane. The sounds of his footfalls reverberated across the walls as he tried to get out of the warehouse. He was sure that the men that were looking for him were in another room by now, but that didn't mean that another set of guards wouldn't be looking for him. He heard another set of footsteps following behind him; they were lighter than his. He quickly turned around, pulling out his handgun and pointing it at whatever-whoever-was following him. His unsteady hands made the gun shake in his grip. If he were to fire any shot, it would be horribly inaccurate. His gun fell to the ground at the sight of her. "Maya?"

Desolate, eerie. Mold climbed along the brick walls; graffiti littered the premises, melding onto the sidewalk and along the rough structures. This was not a place Maya would have imagined Jamie to wander off to. He was leading a life of crime; danger lurked at every corner. Uneasy breaths slipped from her lips. She felt lightheaded, unable to withstand the turmoil. As Jamie came to a sudden standstill, her heart lurched in her chest. A gun was positioned between his fingertips. She definitely wouldn't want to be shot with that thing - it was clear that he was quite out of practice. Faintly, a click resounded as the gun fell to the awaiting sidewalk. Moments later, she practically fell into his embrace. Her face was buried in the crook of his neck; her entire body was shaking, both due to the shock and the thrill of seeing him, Jamie, again.

Jamie hadn't felt the embrace of someone in months, and he welcomed it with open arms. He hadn't been able to let down his guard for so long, and it felt like such a relief to see a familiar face, but he knew that it wasn't for the best. He was dangerous. He was deadly. Jamie Dameron would get people killed. Yet, in that moment he finally showed everything he had been feeling for the past few months. He sobbed into her shoulder, shaking all the while. His heart was still beating a mile a minute. He couldn't seem to focus. Jamie Dameron was terrified, and for the first time in his life, he knew the true meaning of the word. He simply held Maya in his arms for a moment before he whispered, "What the hell are you doing here? It's not safe."

As his arms encircled her, they were tight; a hold so grand that it nearly swept the breath from her lungs. A musk scent clung to him like a stagnant cologne, one that remained enclosed in a bottle for far too long. How long had it been since she had seen Jamie? Weeks, months? She had lost count. As the sobs racked his body, Maya's hold on him tightened. Though she always felt so weak and useless, she felt the need to protect Jamie within this moment. Slowly, she rubbed his back, as if to ease the tension from his muscles. The terror was reflected in his eyes and in his stance. This was the first time that Maya witnessed Jamie's vulnerability. Her eyes fell to the pavement, memorizing the pepper tint that coated the cemented surface. "I could say the same for you, moppy head," she weakly noted; the nickname as it fell from her lips did not possess the same light tone that it once had. it was solemn, weak.

Jamie managed to stifle a laugh, but with his sobs accompanying it, it sounded rather pathetic. "You were always the crazy one, Amberly," he managed to say, trying to compose himself. He never let anyone see him like this, and it made him feel even more out in the open than he had before. "Do your parents know you are here?" he asked, taking her hands in his and looking down as he entwined his fingers with hers. He was surprised at the fact that she still felt something for him. He broke his promise. "You need to go back, Maya. It isn't safe for you here," he admitted.

The laughter was music to her hears; it swept across the space in an array of light. She hadn't heard Jamie's laugh in so long, and she realized that she had grown to miss it. "Crazy hardly classifies me, Jamie," she refused, drawing back so that she could peer into his features. Dirt and grime covered his face, discoloring the hue from underneath. The pad of her thumb swiped away the tears that streaked down his cheekbones. Her own fingertips were trembling. As his hands captured hers, warmth swept over her being. The urgency in his words made her tense. "No, there was no way that they would have left me leave otherwise," she answered, her lips trembling slightly. Shaking her head, she immediately drew away. The thought of leaving without Jamie by her side crushed her. "Not without you. This trip would be for a lost cause otherwise."

Jamie should have known that she didn't ask hr parents. Both of them would have never even dreamed of letting her run off to go find him. He just wasn't worth it. He glanced down at their hands, her own shaking just as much as his. He just wished that she would understand the importance of it all. "Maya," he whispered, placing a hand on her cheek, "I got myself into some trouble-trouble that can get me and everyone around me killed. I don't want you caught in the cross fire," he said. He looked down at the gun that he had dropped. He was running low on ammunition. If he was going to live, he needed to scrounge up some money and buy some. "I'm not good for you." He never had been, and as much as he tried, he never would be.

The journey was forbidden, which is exactly why she descended from her bedroom within the lone hours of the night. Secrecy was her only advantage, and it paid off, for she found Jamie just as she had set out to do from the beginning. Time was of the essence, however; soon enough, her family would realize that she had disappeared, that she was not merely sulking in her room due to Jamie's absence. As Jamie's hand folded along her cheek, she leaned into his hand; it was rough, mauled by callouses and scars. She didn't remember it being so before. Her own lifted, folding around his own. She was terrified that he would sink into the abyss. What if Jamie were a mere illusion? An entity that her mind concocted to entertain her? "Then I will help you. We are a team, you and me. I am not scare of anything...except losing you again," she insisted, her heart pounding inconsistently as she peered into Jamie's eyes; the plea reflected in the gleaming depths.

Jamie shook his head, feeling tears star to fall down his why. Why could she not understand that he could get her killed! Maya had so much ahead of her. She was smart and incredibly kind. He was holding her back from everything. He opened his mouth to speak, but he stopped when he heard footsteps. He felt his entire body grow cold. He quickly grabbed his gun and put a hand over Maya's mouth, pulling her into the shadows. It took everything in him to keep his breathing steady, but he was sure that Maya could hear his racing heart. A couple of men with guns, guns that were much bigger than Jamie's, rounded te corner. "We know you're here, Jamie," one of them said. The other followed with a smirk and said, "Dexter's looking for you. If you don't turn yourself in, he's going to go after people you care for. Starting with whoever is here with you right now." At that, Jamie gripped his gun tighter. He would do crazy, irrational things if it meant Maya was safe. He slowly removed his hand from her mouth. He was starting to move out of the shadows, his gun poised.

Streaks of pure crystalline were marked by the dull dust that covered his cheeks. The pad of her thumb reached out, swiping aside the stray marks with trembling fingertips. Words, Maya was awaiting the simple declaration that would once more send her on her merry way. Nevertheless, the words died upon his tongue. Her body went rigid in response to the pad of footsteps across the cement. As his hand clamped over her mouth, she fought the urge to shake him off. Warmth leaked out of her body, leaving her with a lifeless, empty shell. It dawned on her how critical the situation was. Her heart lurched as the taunting words coated the airstream. Their reunion was short lived. As Jamie twisted to move out into the open, her fingers outstretched in order to stop him. "Jamie, no!" she hissed, her voice a mere whisper. Was there no other method of escape? This was not her line of expertise. An escape plan was implausible. She was not Daphne by any means.

Jamie paused only a moment when he heard Maya's words. He turned to her, and he grabbed her hand, pulling her into a kiss. Only after a few moments did he pull away. "Maya, whenever I move, I want you to run. Run and don't you dare look back at me, okay," he whispered, his voice breaking as he spoke. This was so stupid. Deadly and stupid, but if it bought Maya some time, he would do it. His gaze lingered a moment on her before he cocked his gun and stepped out of the shadows, firing at the men. They cursed at the sudden fire and ran to seek cover. Jamie looked back after a moment to make sure that Maya was running. He didn't know what he would do if she got caught up in it all.

Fingers splayed across her wrist; the grip was so tight that she felt her own breath catch in her throat. As he drew her in close, she was stunned as his lips fell upon hers. In an instant, the destructive seemed to pass. Warmth traced her being; the pressure of his lips upon hers was glorious. Yet, the danger lurked in the midst of it all. What if this was the last kiss that they would ever share? The prospect shattered the thin ray of hope that crossed her thoughts. Once he broke free, she peered up into his eyes. His words were distorted, as if she had been submerged under water. Nonetheless, as he dipped out of the shadows, she did as he suggested. The footwork was difficult, for her legs were equivalent to limp noodles. Despite Jamie's instance, she did dare a glance back in his direction, only to be captured at the elbow and pressed up against the wall. "My oh my, you look just like your father."

Jamie fired as much as he could, hoping to hit something, but with his intoxicated state of mind, his aim was off. Before he knew it, he was out of bullets. He felt fiery pain come into his leg, and before he even knew what was going on, it gave out and he was on his knees. He held the wound, hissing in pain. It didn't stop there, though. Another shot was fired, landing right in his shoulder. That one seemed to hurt worse than the former. He let a scream escape his lips as he let his bloody hand clutch his shoulder. He let himself look back to see if Maya made it, but what he saw wasn't at all what he was expecting. He quickly tried to get up, but his leg wouldn't seem to cooperate. "Let her go!"

Questions surged through Maya's mind; she was horrified to discover the answer to any of them, however. In a blur of colors, the man whirled her around with his arm entrapping her. The heated barrel of the gun was pressed to her temple. The temperature indicated that it had been used much too recently for Maya's liking. Her heart rate accelerated as the pressure increased. Worry brimmed in her gaze as she peered at Jamie; the gaping wounds twisted her insides. All of a sudden, his finger twitched over the trigger; once he pulled back, a crackle of sound ignited the area. Yet, Maya was still standing. The shot was a blank. "Next one will kill her if you don't listen to me, boy," he snapped, the deep tenor vibrating throughout her bones.

Jamie felt sick as he watched the man press his gun against Maya's head. Behind him, he could hear the footfalls of the men that had shot him; following that he felt the barrel of a gun being pressed to the back of his head. He knew that they wouldn't hesitate. His breaths were ragged as he held on to the wound on his shoulder. Everything seemed to go in slow motion as the trigger was pulled. He reached out, screaming Maya's name, but to his surprise, she was completely fine. He knew that that couldn't be ensured for long, though. "What do you want? I'll give you anything. Just let her go," he whispered.

Her pulse buzzed in her ears; a constant beat that she kept in time with. Her gaze was fixated on the ground beneath her. The asphalt melded with a rusty tint, and Maya had a sickening feeling that that was blood splattered across the ground. A malicious trill of laughter slipped from Dexter's lips. Daunting, his fingers were as they hovered over the trigger. "Now, Jamie, you know it is never that easy...unless you can fork up the money," he noted, a bland note seeping throughout the phrase, as if he were bored with the subject. "Otherwise, both of you will find yourself...locked up."

Jamie knew this man wasn't bluffing. He had seen what he had done with boys who wouldn't pay up. They were never seen again after Dexter got his hands on them. But the money he had lost...thousands of dollars just to help with his addiction. There was no way that he could give him that kind of money. Well, he could rob a bank, but that would land him in even more trouble. "Please, I don't have that kind of money. I'll do anything you want if it means you leave her alone," he whispered. Maya didn't deserve it. His gaze was slowly cast to the drops of blood that seemed to fall from where his hand was clutched on his shoulder. There was no letting the damage that had been done and how much a hospital bill would be.

Dearly, Maya hoped that she would wake from this nightmare, that the entire fiasco was a mere delusion that her mind concocted, and she wished that Jamie was nestled beneath the heated covers of his warm bed, not risking his life and making horrid decisions in life. Only, in life, people did not always get what they yearned for. A frown slipped over the man's features; the appearance was disturbing and sent chills tumbling down her spine. "Listen to me," he snapped, his tone sour as each syllable trickled from his lips. "You will come up with the money, and until you do, she will be locked away. Kapeesh?" A malicious smile tweaked along the corners of his mouth as the barrel of the gun glided from her temple to her collarbone; then, moments later, it rested right over her heart. "Glad to know we are on the same page," he noted, refusing to give Jamie the time to react.

Jamie wanted to kill him. For the first time in his life, he wanted to kill a man, and he knew he wouldn't feel any remorse. If only he hadn't been stupid and wasted all of his bullets in one go. His gaze fell to Maya. Why had he been so stupid to drag her into all of this? Dexter hasn't given him a chance to argue, and he knew that if he pushed him too far, he would pay a heavier price than the price he would have had to pay before. He hated feeling so vulnerable. He couldn't do anything to help Maya. "I'll come back with the money, I swear," he breathed out, his face pale. He would find the money someway, anyway. He managed to stand, but the pain in his face as he put pressure on his wounded leg was clear. He thought about who could call to help. Neither of his parents were an option. They would demand he come home, and it just wasn't that simple. Then it came to him. His sister. As he hobbled away, he tried to remember her phone number.

"You better. You have ten days," Dexter called after him; his tone was clipped as he eyed the boy, wobbling along the ground for dear life. Tight lipped and unforgiving, the menacing man was. His tight grip loosened, only to be replaced by handcuffs. With her hands bound, she was fixated in a situation she couldn't worm her way out of. "Pat her down, check her pockets and grab everything. Even her phone," the man noted, brushing passed the far wall and trekking to his quarters without a care in the world. Little did Jamie know that his efforts would be for a lost cause.

Jamie managed to get himself out of the warehouse, but once he was out, he collapsed on a nearby bench, holding his bleeding shoulder wound. It seemed the one on his leg bled worse the moment that he tried to stand on it. Ten days. He had ten days to get Maya back. He wondered if he could really get the money. He pulled out his phone, dialing the number. Daphne had to pick up. She just had to! Sure, she hated his guts, but maybe her mind had changed after he had gone missing. He started to wonder if his parents cared or not. Were they even worried that he was gone? He was sure that Apollo and Willow were thrilled.

Once the duffel bag collided onto the carpeted flooring, Daphne worked the ache out of her narrow shoulders. How ironic the situation was; she despised cheerleading with ever fiber of her being. Nonetheless, she was fixated on the team. Her family refused to let her quit, deeming the extra curricular was perfect for her. A dull ringing slipped about the room, trickling from her bag. She fumbled in her pockets and frowned as an unknown caller gleamed on the screen. Tentatively, she answered the call; the phone clamped against her ear. "Hello?" she whispered, a frown plastered along the corners of her lips.

Jamie began to worry that she simply wouldn't answer his call. He could feel the pain in his wounds growing the more he waited. He would have to deal with them soon if he didn't want to lose a limb. He let out a sigh of relief when she answered, and he took a moment to take in her voice. It had been so long since he had spoken to her. "Daph...it's Jamie. I need your help," he answered.

As she awaited for the person on the other line to speak, Daphne flopped onto her beanbag, positioned near her open window. The broken edge sent her heart rate spiking. Weeks had passed since she had heard his voice; however, there was no misplacing the distinct tone that traveled from the phone clamped to her ear. She rose to her feet, already packing a meager supply of miscellaneous snacks from the trek over. "Talk to me. Where are you? Are you hurt? You are hurt, aren't you? Don't hang up, and stay awake," she instructed as she scrambled out the window. Her bag fell with a definite thunk onto the grassy flooring.
