Alfred stood outside the door, unwilling to go into the classroom. It was the fifth school that he had gone to ever since he started, and he was only in the second grade. His mother was a single mother, and she worked anywhere that she could find a job. Alfred's father died when he was only a year old from a sickness, so he never did know the man. All he knew was that he was named after him, being the third Alfred Lawerence to be exact, but the little boy hated his name. He called himself Alfie around friends, and his mother did occasionally as well. "Alfred, it's okay. These little boys and girls won't hurt you," the lady taking him to his classroom said. "It's Alfie," he replied meekly, and even though he didn't want it to, the door was opened; he was pushed into the room without another word. "Class, this is our new student, Alred Lawerence. Why don't you tell us about yourself?" the teacher said with a warm smile, but Alfie shook his head shyly, looking toward the ground. "Alright, that's fine. Go take a seat right over there by Naomi and Dominic," she said, pointing to one of the round tables.

"Hey Caroline, look what I drew," Dominic said confidently as he held up the picture. Snorting, Caroline batted the picture away and grumbled, "My name isn't Caroline." Smirking, Dominic placed the page back on the table and stuck out his tongue. "Just like my name isn't Dominic," he replied. Wrinkling her nose, Caroline folded her notebook, brushing a few strands of hair out of her face. "I am Naomi," she insisted; though, only Dominic ever had the privilege of calling her Caroline. He was her best, and only, friend thus far. Most kids in their class teased them and said they were boyfriend and girlfriend - as much as seven years old could "date." At first, the comments had bothered Caroline; but eventually, she brushed them off. As someone she didn't recognize stepped into the room, she tilted her head. "Look at that dweeb," Dominic commented to Caroline, who in response elbowed him in the ribcage. "Be nice, or I might have to replace him as my new best friend," she replied, smirking over at Dominic, whom merely sighed in response.

Alfred walked over to the table, and he sat down beside Caroline, but he didn't say anything. He was too shy, and he was trying to listen to all of the whispers. "Now class, we are going to all work on this worksheet. Alfred, if you have any questions, just ask Naomi," she said, and she started to pass out the piece of paper. It was a math worksheet. Alfred loved math. His father was an engineer, whatever that was, and he wanted to do that. His mother said it took a lot of math, so he practiced it all the time. He always knew how to multiply and divide. It would be an understatement to say that he finished the worksheet quickly. He raised his hand once he was finished, and the teacher sighed. "Alfred, you need to ask Naomi," she said, but he shook his head. "No, I'm finished," he said. The teacher's eye widened, and she tried not to falter. "Draw on the back of it then," she said. Alfred sighed, and he looked at the two kids at the table. "What should I draw?" he asked. It was the first time he spoke to them.

"What's number three?" Dominic whispered, leaning over to Naomi's ear expectantly. Shoving him off, Caroline grumbled, "Do your own math problems." She wasn't terrible at math - definitely better than Dominic - but she always had to take her time going through the problems. So, yes, she was surprised to see that Alfred had already completed his work. "Alferd, Alf-man, Alf-gizzy," Dominic began as he leaned over Naomi to glance to Alfred. "Can you give me the answers oh buddy, oh pal?" he asked with a grin. Caroline, in response, pushed him back. "Draw a flower," she suggested with a grin, to which Dominic butted in. "A flower? No, that's for girls. Draw a monster truck crushing a vampire," Dominic suggested with a smirk at his "fabulous" description. Caroline scowled before she offered her hand. "Hi, I'm Naomi, and he is stupid."

Alfred looked over at Dominic when he started to call him named, and he rolled his eyes. "The only way to get better is to struggle. At least that's what my mom says. And call me Alfie. I don't like my name," he said, and he started to draw a dog on the back. He always wanted one, but his mother never would let him. She said that since they always moved around they would never be able to have one, and it crushed his little heart. He always wanted a big dog too, but his mother said they were too much work to have one. He just wanted it so they could play fetch and do that thing where dogs enter competitions and go through stuff. He may have been good at math, but he couldn't even draw stick men right, so his dog looked more like a cow. He smiled a little bit for the first time when Noami introduced herself. "Call me Alfie," he said, and he stretched out his hand for her to shake, much like he had seen his mother do before.

Merely rolling his eyes, Dominic muttered under his breath, "Dwee- ow!" He glared at Naomi, who innocently grinned in response. Everyone needed a good kick in the shin every now and then. "Alfie...cool name," Naomi commented as she went back to her math problems. "Where did you move from?" she asked curiously after a moment. She threw a glance in his direction, pausing in her math work once more. She had a habit of doing that, and she only got away with it because she did well enough in school that the teacher, usually, dismissed it. Though, she never really had many people to talk to, because Dominic was on the "list," and he was her only friend after all. Unlike Dominic, who deemed Alfie as "uncool" already, Naomi found him different...and different could sometimes be interesting.

Alfie smiled a little bit, and he glanced at Naomi for a moment or two. "I don't really know where I moved from. It was big, I know that. Maybe the Capital. I move so many places that I don't bother to keep up with everywhere I've been," he said, and he glanced over at Dominic for a moment or two. He sure did seem tough. The teacher stood up for a moment. "Alright class, you should be done," she said, and she paused to check the time before continuing by saying that it was snack time. She walked over to Alfie, smiling. "You came late enough that this is about the end of the day. Naomi, Dominic, do you have something you can share with Alfred?" she asked.

Naomi tilted her head and considered this before nodding slowly. She had always lived in district two; sometimes she would hear the other kids bragging about how far they have gotten in their training - fact was for Naomi, she rarely did train. What she knew it was Dominic would teach her, which wasn't much when he was about as clumsy as they come. When the teacher spoke, she lifted her head in surprise and glanced down at her finished problems. Well, at least she had them done. "I do," she answered the teacher, already guessing Dominic wouldn't want to share his food. Stingy Stinger. She pulled out her bag that had a glazed danish inside. Most of the time her mom would leave a note of some sorts. Her face fell when she noticed that there wasn't a note. Lately, she hadn't been leaving them as usual, and when she did, they were usually so short, unlike the long ones she used to use. She had noticed the slight changes in her mother recently; tired, weak, always forcing a smile. It was all so...confusing.

Alfie looked over at Noami, and he smiled a bit once the teacher had left. "I'm not hungry. You don't have to give me anything," he told her, and he looked around at the rest of the class. At least he wasn't the center of attention anymore. "What is it like here?" he asked, but he had a feeling that he wouldn't be staying long. He never was good at making friends. He didn't see why he should when he was just going to move away. He hoped and prayed that it would be different this time since he finally made some friends.

Naomi shrugged, deciding not to push it. She opened the packet with the pastry inside and pondered the thought. Her eyes drifted up to the ceiling thoughtfully. "It is...hard. A lot of people train," she murmured finally, staring down at the glazed danish momentarily. "I don't really...," she continued, shrugging her shoulders as she took a bite of the danish. At least it was an excuse not to delve into her life. Of course, Dominic, the modest person that he is, puffed out his chest and stated, "I train everyday. I taught Naomi here everything she knows." Glaring, Naomi muttered in response, "Which isn't much because you are a terrible teacher and a klutz."

Alfie listened to Naomi quietly, taking in all of the words that she said. "Really? I've never been to a place where people trained. I mean, there was the Capital, but I was only there for a month. I've usually lived in some of the poorer districts like seven or twelve because my mom does hard labor, but she finally started working in a business or something like that, and we moved here. I'm worried that it won't last all that long either," he said, and he listened to Dominic, laughing at Naomi's comment. "I don't think I would be too good either."

Naomi tilted her head thoughtfully, twiddling her thumbs as she did so. "Most do it if they are picked for the hunger games," she whispered. The simple word sent shivers down her spine. Her brother was no old enough to be entered in. Sure, the higher up districts had a better chance of winning. Yet, she didn't like the thought of losing her brother. They were somehow close, especially when her mother was off working long hours or too depressed to actually spend time with them. Sometimes it felt like it was merely just them.

Alfie looked before the two of them, a little bit baffled. "Wait, in district two, don't people volunteer? Why would anyone want to be in there?" he asked. Already training when they were just even years old? He wasn't sure if he like district two as much as he thought he did befor. He looked between the two of them once more and thought for a moment. He thought about his mother again. It would break her heart if she ever had her only son in the games, and it terrified him. He wasn't even of age and he was already having nightmares. "What do you guys want to be when you grow up?"

Naomi's eyes drifted to the ground as she considered his words. "I don't know," she whispered quietly. Unlike most, the thought of the games terrified her. She wanted her family as well as herself to remain safe. The games wet anything but. The thought of killing someone frightened her more than the chance of her dying. Yet, the odds were more than likely in her favor. Most, as Alfie pointed out, volunteered in district two. Luckily, Alfie changed the subject before she could dwell on it. "I always wanted to be a news anchor," she murmured with a sheepish smile. She would much rather report the things that happened than actually be apart of it. Dominic cut in with a beaming grin, "I want to be a spy." He flexed his nonexistent muscles, and Caroline rolled her eyes. "May the odds be ever in your favor," she replied, mimicking the representative of their district; the posh accent slipping from her lips smoothly.

Alfie smiled as he listened to the two of them, and he started to laugh. "From what I have heard, you aren't the most graceful person, so I don't think that would be an ideal career for you," he said. For only being about eight, he had a large vocabulary, along with his math skills. "I want to be an eingineer like my dad was. I want to be just like him. My mom said he was really cool," he said, a bright smile coming to his face as he talked about the father he never really knew.

Naomi twiddled her thumbs uncertainly. "My mom never talks about my dad," she whispered, averting her gaze to her math problems. She would ask, but her mother would always dismiss it. Her brother wasn't much help either; she doubted he remembered much about him. Dominic, on the other hand, scowled at the mention of fathers. "I don't want to be like my dad," he grumbled, losing his usual snarky, comical demeanor. Naomi leaned in to whisper, "His dad yells at him a lot and drinks....a lot." That was one reason Dominic always ended up at her house; his house wasn't exactly...safe when his father was around.

Alfie listened to Dominic, and as Noami explained to him, everything else seemed to make sense. He let out a breath that seemed to resemble an 'ah.' He could see why someone wouldn't want to be like their father when their father was like that. He glanced over when the teacher stood up. "Alright kiddos, it's that time of the day!" she said. The end of the day. Suddenly, the speakers came on. "Ms. Riley?" a woman said from one end of the intercom. The teacher picked up the phone that hung from the source of the noise. She nodded, listened before hanging up. She walked over to their table once more, an action that seemed to be common for her. "Your mother is stuck in a meeting and won't be out until later this evening. Do you have anywhere to go?" she asked Alfie, and he smiled. He could go home with his new friend! "Yes," he said without even thinking.

Naomi perked up at the mention of the end of the day. Just what she liked to hear! She packed away her things into her backpack, stuffing everything inside quickly. Her eyes trailed to Alfie when he spoke, and she tilted her head to the side. "You do?" she inquired, arching a brow in his direction. She zipped her backpack and pulled it over her shoulders. Dominic was already jeering to go, which was no surprise to Naomi. More than likely, he would get himself into trouble if his father noticed that he was even a minute late getting home. It was rather unfortunate. Though, was it really more unfortunate that her mother rarely being around? She wasn't quite sure.

Alfie smiled a little bit when he heard Naomi, and he nodded, blushing a bit. "Well, I was hoping that maybe I could come home with you. I mean, I really don't have any other place to go, and I can't walk home," he said shyly. He was horrible at talking to anyone, but he was even worse at talking to a girl that he thought were pretty, and Noami was at the top of his list. Maybe she was at the top of the list because she was so nice to him, or maybe because she was one of the prettiest girls he had ever met in his life.

Shifting her backpack on her shoulders, Naomi shrugged and glanced over at where Dominic had been. He already left the room, sharp quip and all. "Yeah," she agreed finally with a small grin sliding onto her face. "I think my mom and brother will be happy to see that I have another friend besides Dom," she murmured finally. Naomi and Dominic were always stuck together like glue. No one else could really put up with Dom like she could, and well, most people were intimidated of Naomi because she was friends with Dom. It was an odd cycle. "We have to meet my brother at the bus stop."

Alfie smiled as he packed the little things that he had, and he followed Noami out the door like he was a little, lost puppy, and he smiled. Although he was taller than her, he seemed small beside her. He was scared of the new place. There were more people in District Two than he ever expected. It was a busy and bustling city with tons and tons of people, and it scared him. At least it wasn't as bad as the Capital. He hated the Capital with everything in him.

"I'm so going to cream you, Naomi!" Dominic declared as he pressed his fingers repeatedly against the controls. Little did Dominic know that Naomi wasn't, and never had been, interested in the game. Though, she would have beat him - if she were actually trying, which she wasn't. Once the game ended and Dominic was, unofficially, declared the winner, Naomi jumped up from her seat on the plush sofa. "I want apple juice. You two want apple juice?" she asked, glancing between Dominic and Alfie. "No, I wanna play another game. Ready for the challenge, Alfie?" Dominic asked with a smirk, to which Naomi rolled her eyes and stepped off into the kitchen. She was finished with Dominic's shenanigans. Sometimes he was so annoying.

Alfie had spent the most time he had ever spent in one place in District Two. His very best friends became Dominic and Naomi. Without them, he had no idea what he would do. He rolled his eyes as he watched the two of them, and he smirked a bit. "I think I could use some juice before I play another game. Besides, you should let your thumbs rest before they fall off," he said jokingly, and he started to walk to the kitchen, but he stopped when he saw a few burly men talking to Naomi's mother. They then made their way over to him. "Alfred, you need to come with us. I am sorry to inform you, but your mother has passed away," he said with a sympathetic look on his face. He could feel the tears coming to his eyes, and he looked back at the only people who he had ever trusted. He quickly started to shake his head. "I can stay with Naomi," he said desperately, but the man picked him up. "I'm sorry, but you need to go with us," he said, and he started to cry, trying to pull away. "No! No! I don't want to go with you! Naomi, Dominic, help me! Don't let them take me!" he screamed, reaching out for them, but he was gone before they could do anything.

Alred walked into the large building. They were at war, and they were starting to lose. After losing his mother to an unknown illness, he had been sent to orphanages all around or just to anyone that would take him. He returned to his normal, shy self, unable to make any friends. He did what he wanted to do, though. he became an engineer, and he was working on one of the biggest projects of their time. Sadly, if he was ever credited, it would not be by his real name. He was going by the alias Knox Porter. He walked down the hall, running a hand through his hair. "Good morning, Mr. Sherwood," he said, tipping his hat to the childhood friend. He just wished that he could say who he was. He wanted to know where Naomi was. He still thought she was beautiful after all those year. He even kept a picture of the gold trio in his breast pocket.

The voice brought his attention from his task to the man who spoke. Dominic was rarely serious, but he was serious about his job. Was this his dream job? No, architecture was more up his alley. Yet, there weren't many job opportunities, especially with the war brewing in the depths. "Morning," he said with a nod of his head, closing the folder he was holding and tucking it underneath his arm. There wasn't much else he could say. He didn't know the man well; just his last name. Porter. One of the best engineers they had. He was their key to winning, the slim advantage they needed.

Knox made his way over to his desk, and much like every other morning, he sat down with a cup of coffee and started on his work. Every time he got stressed, he would close his eyes and pull out his picture of his friends. They seemed to be the only ones keeping him sane. After what seemed to be hours upon hours of work, he finally finished the plans. He got up and rushed from his spot. "Dom-inic!" he noted his slip up, almost calling his boss by his childhood name. He couldn't know who he was. Nobody could. "I finished the blueprints. Next is the prototype," he said. He was going to need some more coffee right away.
